NaNo
Last December, I found out that November was National Write a Novel Month (NaNoWriMo), also known as NaNo. I was a bit upset that I missed it that year, but marked it in my calendar for this year. Since November 1st, my life has been revolving around my laptop. This has been a task within itself because of my small children. I have even found ways of getting them involved with NaNo. I ask them to draw pictures for a children’s book (that I’m not writing) and it keeps them entertained and allow me to keep an eye on their every move.
The idea of writing a novel in a month is scary but exciting. I am using this opportunity to challenge myself and measure my own ability, instead of making it a competition. Hopefully it will help get me back in the groove of things with my other WIP, which has stalled after I hit a brick wall.
How are you other NaNo participants planning on getting through the month? I would like to know. Maybe one of you has a routine or secret technique that I can borrow.
Happy writing!

I chickened out of NaNo this year, even though I can’t stop myself from scribbling novel notes on every scrap of paper and napkin I can find. I applaud your efforts. I don’t have any advice on routine, but I do know that when I was writing my dissertation, it helped to think of everything I wrote, even scribbles on the back of an envelope, as work that counted. I gave myself credit for the thinking and creating I was doing, even when that thinking and creating happened away from my computer.
I started NaNo off chugging along. I set a ten pages a day goal for myself. The last 4 days, though, have been lost in a sea of not-getting-off-the-couch… I wanted o use this month to develop good writing habits and the dedication to not make excuses and get it done, to see if tenp ages a day was even possible or if it was overreaching. I will know how well it’ working after this weekend. I have a lot of pages to make up!
Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress. I love your blog!
