Michelle Monkou, RWA President

Michelle Monkou The end of this month sees the passing of the baton from Diane Pershing to Michelle Monkou. While Monkou isn’t the first African-American president of the RWA (Shirley Hailstock in 2002/03), I do know that things have changed dramatically within the last six or seven years. As president, what will Monkou’s goal be? Is her presence as the face of America’s official romance organization to show that yes, the genre is inclusive of every race, ethnicity, etc? I am even more interested in what her term will hold now that an Asian-American woman writing Asian romances has won a GH, the e-publishing segment is pressing for more education and respect, and the RWA has its first GLBT writers group.

But enough speculation. Rather than grumble and complain in private, ask Michelle Monkou:

her website at http://www.michellemonkou.com.
Her My Space is http://www.myspace.com/michellemonkou.
Her Twitter is http://twitter.com/michellemonkou
She can be contacted at michelle@michellemonkou.com or
P.O. Box 2904, Laurel, MD 20709

  • [...] my search, I did come across some interesting information. For example, the incoming president of the Romance Writers of America is African American. In fact, RWA will have its second black president this decade. The news comes [...]

  • I don’t think her election will make a blind bit of difference. She’ll just follow the footsteps of the white RWA presidents who came before. I know, I’m a total pessimist, but had she been a Monica Jackson type gal, there’s no way she’d have been elected in the first place. The most postive thing I can say is…baby steps.
